Soho International Film Festival
Now in its sixth year Soho Film Festival in New York encourages both emerging and established filmmakers and celebrates digital technology as well as traditional film.
Among the films being screened is Highway to Dhampus – written and directed by Rick McFarland – in which the headmistress of a small orphanage in Nepal is visited by a rich socialite who is intent on fixing her public image with charitable acts.

Shirin Neshat: Facing History
Shirin Neshat: Facing History places the Iranian-born video artist’s work in the context of modern Iranian history and shows at the Smithsonian’s Hirshhorn Museum. The museum director, Melissa Chiu, says: “Neshat imaginatively engages with contemporary realities, conveying deep conviction with a powerful and authentic voice.”
Reflecting the changing status of women in Iran, Neshat presents a poetic unfolding of history. The film Munis (2008) is a magical-realist work based around political events in the 1950s, while a trio of video installations – Turbulent, Rapture and Fervor – is an allegorical take on gender politics.

Scotland + Venice: Graham Fagen
Darkly humorous artist Graham Fagen has been selected to represent Scotland in the Scotland + Venice 2015 presentation at the 56th Venice Biennale. Exhibiting a new body of work throughout four rooms of Palazzo Fontana, Fagen blurs the lines between art, theatre and cinema.
His recent work includes installations such as The Making of Us (2012), a collaboration with theatre director Graham Eatough in which the audience become extras in a film, participating in the unfolding drama.

China: Through the Looking Glass
China has inspired western fashion for centuries, and China: Through the Looking Glass explores this obsession with Chinese imagery and culture – from the 16th Century onwards, creative interpretations of Chinese mythologies have permeated European culture. Designers Paul Poiret and Yves Saint Laurent are among the names featured in the exhibition which will be displayed in the museum’s Chinese Galleries as well as the Anna Wintour Costume Center.
More than a hundred examples of garments will be shown alongside decorative arts from Imperial China as well as filmic representations of the country. There will also be a focus on Chinese opera which inspired some of John Galliano’s haute couturecollections for Dior.
