Dame Angela Lansbury 'relieved' as Murder, She Wrote remake is scrappe


Dame Due to star Octavia Spencer, who won an Oscar for The Help, a pilot episode was ordered last October. Deadline reported that TV network NBC had now pulled the plug on the show. Dame Angela, who played amateur sleuth Jessica Fletcher in the original series, told the BBC she was "terribly pleased and relieved" by the news. She added: "Octavia Spencer is a superb actress. She had no business being put into a situation that she couldn't win."


23 million viewers

The original was one of the most successful series in TV history with Lansbury playing mystery writer and amateur detective Jessica Fletcher in 264 episodes from 1984-1996. It the height of its popularity, Murder, She Wrote attracted 23 million viewers in the US. Lansbury won four Golden Globes and 12 consecutive Emmy nominations for her performance. In the remake, Spencer was to be a hospital administrator who dabbled in detective work. When the plans were announced, Lansbury said she was not happy they were using the same title. "So I'm sorry that they have to use the title Murder, She Wrote, even though they have access to it and it's their right." Angela Lansbury says she is "relieved" a planned remake of her detective show Murder, She Wrote has been scrapped.


Brokeback Mountain opera to premiere in Madrid


An operatic version of the 1997 novella Brokeback Mountain is to premiere at the Teatro Real in Madrid later this month.




The libretto has been written by the book's author, Annie Proulx, with music by US composer Charles Wuorinen. The story revolves around two cowboys, both of whom are married, who start an affair when they meet in 1963.It was made into an Oscar-winning film by Ang Lee in 2005, starring the late Heath Ledger and Jake Gyllenhaal. Proulx's original short story first appeared in the New Yorker.




The two-act opera will run from 28 January until 11 February and will star Canadian bass baritone Daniel Okulitch and US tenor Tom Randle. The project marks a revival of an original commission made by the New York Opera in 2008, when Gerard Mortier was its general director.



Young Vic



Two years later, Mortier moved to Spain to take up the post of general director of the Teatro Real in Madrid and brought the project with him. Wuorinen's previous work includes Haroun and the Sea of Stories, an adaptation of a Salman Rushdie novel, which opened in 2004 in New York.



The director of Dutch theatre company Toneelgroep, van Hove has gained a reputation for his screenplay adaptations for the stage and was the first theatre director to secure rights to adapt the works of film-makers including Ingmar Bergman and John Cassavetes. His theatrical adaptation of Bergman's Scenes from a Marriage played the Barbican in November last year. It was recently announced that the Belgian will direct Arthur Miller's A View from the Bridge, starring Mark Strong and Nicola Walker, which will open at the Young Vic on 4 April.

 Pitbull and Jennifer Lopez  2014 World Cup



FIFA have named a track by Pitbull and Jennifer Lopez as the official anthem for the 2014 World Cup in Brazil.





We Are One (Ole Ola), which also features Brazilian singer Claudia Leitte, will be performed at the opening ceremony at the Arena de Sao Paulo on 12 June The track will be released later this year in the lead up to the World Cup. It will also be included on the upcoming Official 2014 FIFA World Cup Album.




Pitbull said: "I truly believe that this great game and the power of music will help unify us, because we are best when we are one. "The 33-year-old singer, also known as Mr Worldwide, has had 11 top ten singles in the Official UK chart to date.


His most recent single, Timber, which features Kesha was the first number one of 2014. "I grew up in a house that loved football, so I am thrilled to be performing at the World Cup Opening Ceremonies with Pitbull and Claudia Leitte," said Jennifer Lopez. "This is an amazing celebration of global unity, competition and the sport."




The last FIFA World Cup song for the South Africa tournament in 2010 was Waka Waka by Shakira.


The track peaked at number 21 in the UK singles chart and the video has been viewed almost 600 million times on YouTube.
